The Glazers are 'playing with fire' after takeover latest - 'I feel sorry for Man United', Agbonlahor says
Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed he "feels sorry" for Man United with the Glazers risking significant fan backlash over their handling of the takeover situation.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the American owners are unlikely to provide the funds needed for them to fight for the Premier League title if they remain at the club.
Sources told this site (28 April) that the Glazer Family are legitimately undecided about their future at Man United with the final deadline for final bids set for midnight on Friday.
The American owners have been presented with three options by the groups involved in the bidding process – remain in majority control with external investment, retain a minority stake or sell their equity entirely.
Man United's fans have been vocal about their preference for a new owner to take control of the club - with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group or the Qatari consortium led by Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani close to meeting the £6billion valuation.
The Red Devils will be planning their transfer business for the summer with Erik ten Hag's side well-placed to play Champions League football in the 2023-24 campaign.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I do feel sorry for Man United, I feel their pain.
“I do mock them sometimes about wanting the Glazers out, but when you hear about what’s going on behind the scenes – the fans must be pulling their hair out.
“It’s time for the Glazers to go back to America, let new owners come in and help them compete again.
“Man United aren’t far away. They’re three or four players away from competing for a league title.
“If the Glazers stay in, then you can’t see that kind of investment coming.
“I think they’re playing with fire and I can see a lot of backlash from the fans if they stay at the club.”
