Brennan Johnson's "excuse" of a performance against Liverpool has drawn the ire of fed up Tottenham Hotspur fans.

Johnson and Tottenham's frontline got off to the perfect start at Anfield as Ange Postecoglou's side attempted to delay Liverpool's confirmation of the Premier League title, as Dominic Solanke scored early.

Solanke's twelfth-minute header was cancelled out a matter of moments later by Luis Diaz, and Liverpool soon hit their straps to score twice more before half-time through Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo.

Mohamed Salah's strike just after the hour mark put the final nail in any chance of a comeback in the second half, and an own goal from Destiny Udogie six minutes later added insult to injury for Tottenham.

'Brennan Johnson goes missing' for Tottenham v Liverpool

Solanke's goal being rendered a footnote within 10 minutes by Diaz and Mac Allister was lapped up by the raucous Anfield crowd, but it was Gakpo's third in the 34th minute which proved to be the clincher.

A Liverpool corner was headed out at the near post by Lucas Bergvall and fell to the Dutchman, before Johnson was left on his back in the box with a poor attempted clearance, and easily beaten by Gakpo.

With the hosts 3-1 up and in cruise control heading into a precession-like second half, Johnson's early run in behind resulted in an inevitable offside flag; a passage of play which summed up his performance.

Tottenham fans react to 'excuse of a footballer' Johnson

Unlike his fellow starters Solanke, Mathys Tel and Archie Gray, Johnson saw out the full 90 despite an anonymous display at Anfield, with Pedro Porro left on the bench as their only other option on the right-hand side.

Johnson's lack of impact at either end wasn't missed by the Tottenham faithful, and several said that the Welshman's continued position in the side is the equivalent of Postecoglou's side "playing with 10 men".

Viewed by Spurs fans as a "waste" of £50million and an "excuse of a footballer", it's safe to say that despite a team-high 16 goals in all competitions this term, Johnson still has a long way to go if he's to etch his name in North London history.
