Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move for Burnley wide-man Scott Arfield.
The Sun claimed in it’s print edition on Wednesday 22 March (page 52) that the north east giants were looking at the 28-year-old with his contract set to enter it’s final year in the summer.
It is assumed that the experienced Canada international would come at a small cost due to his contract situation.
However, with a return of just one goal and one assist in 30 appearances in all competitions for Burnley this season there are questions as to whether he is good enough for the Magpies.
Here, Football Insider have identified three Premier League options for Rafa Benitez’ side who would secure their survival in England’s top-flight next season.
Townsend, 25, was heavily linked with a return to Newcastle throughout January, but nothing materialised before the deadline.
Benitez knows the England international well after working with him at the back end of the last campaign and while the player has seen more pitch time under Sam Allardyce since the winter window, Crystal Palace may look to cash in.
Townsend has a goal and three assists more than Arfield in just one extra outing this season and his ability to play on either wing makes him a constant threat to top-flight defences.
The Serbian is reportedly growing unsettled at Southampton after being subbed off by manager Claude Puel in the Saints’ last four league matches.
But, Tadic has proven to be a success in England since joining from FC Twente in 2014 and the 28-year-old has returned 15 goals and 26 assists in 88 Premier League outings.
The experienced player boasts the ability to play across the attacking midfield three and he could lay a number of balls onto a plate for star forward Dwight Gayle next season with his expert delivery.
Traore has struggled at Middlesbrough since joining from Aston Villa in the summer, but there is definitely some talent within him.
At 21 the pacey wide player still has many years to grow into a top quality player and while he is yet to show that at Boro, a short move across the north to Newcastle under Benitez could do him wonders.
The experienced manager has a history of getting the best out of players and he could pull out a future star in his fellow country man Traore.
