Freddie Woodman to jump at Newcastle United transfer after source's update

Freddie Woodman should jump at the chance to leave Newcastle United this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about whether the Magpies player should leave the club.

On Friday (10 June), this site revealed Preston North End have opened talks to sign Woodman.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider the 25-year-old is well down the pecking order at St James’ Park and he has been given the green light to find a new club.

Woodman was the first choice at Swansea for two seasons but made just one appearance in 2021-22 for Bournemouth, where he played second fiddle to Mark Travers during a frustrating period.

Kenny insists Woodman will take the chance to become Preston’s number one.

“At his age, 25, he should be going out and playing,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He did well at Swansea. It is actually scary for me to be talking about him because I played against his Dad, Andy.

“It’s a no-brainer if he has the chance to go there. Why sit around and be third or fourth choice when you have the chance to go out there and be number one?

“If that move is available he should absolutely take it.”

Woodman made four Premier League appearances at the start of the 2021-22 season but lost his position after a number of mistakes and the return to fitness of Martin Karl Darlow.

He has made nine total appearances for the club.
