Noel Whelan has been left raving as Leeds United plot a potential raid for San Lorenzo striker Adolfo Gaich this summer.
The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the 21-year-old Argentina international is exactly what Marcelo Bielsa needs as an alternative option up front.
As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds are considering triggering Gaich’s £12million release clause as they look to bolster their forward line this summer.
The Whites currently have Patrick Bamford, Jean-Kevin Augustin and Tyler Roberts as their senior centre-forward options.
However, Whelan believes Gaich, who has seven goals in 27 appearances for San Lorenzo, would offer a different option in attack, suggesting he is exactly what is needed at Elland Road.
Whelan told Football Insider: “They’ve obviously done their checking on this player and not just over a short space of time, it’ll be a lengthy scouting mission looking at this sort of player.
“Sounds to me very much like a Ryan Edmondson – very good in the air, very powerful, strong so they’ve obviously seen they maybe need a little bit more height and power up front.
“He seems to know where the goal is, I’ve seen some of his clips, I’ve looked at him already and he’s a player, if he’s in the Argentina national squad, then he’s a player that is quite handy to have. You don’t just get into the Argentina side alongside Messi without being a very good player.
“I’m sure they’ve got a number of quality strikers in Argentina they can choose from so he obviously has something pretty special and £12million release clause, for someone so young, seems like a very, very good price.
“We’ve always said we need a change up front, something a little bit different – everyone was saying Ryan Edmondson but now this Argentinian player is different.
“He’s a bit more of a hold up player, he’s not blessed with pace from what I hear but he knows where the goal is and can bring others into play. It’s exactly the Patrick Bamford-type player but a bit more rugged, I would think, up front. If we can get this one it’s a good coup.”
In other Leeds United news, Marcelo Bielsa has been spotted in meetings at a Premier League side as numerous transfers are touted.
