FSG could hand Ward Liverpool transfer war chest after £273m reveal - pundit

Kevin Campbell has stressed the importance of Julian Ward “getting up to speed” before Michael Edwards vacates his position as Liverpool sporting director next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suggested Edwards would also make signings and renew player contracts before his exit.

In a statement last Wednesday, the Reds announced their sporting director would step down from his position at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Julian Ward, who is currently assistant sporting director, will take the reins ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Liverpool have spend relatively little compared to their Premier League rivals in recent seasons.

Analysis from Football Insider finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed Liverpool could spend £273million without breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

When asked by if Ward could be handed a sizeable budget in his first summer, Campbell told Football Insider: “It’s a real possibility, definitely.

“There is a lot of work to be done in the background at Liverpool over the next couple of seasons.

“Getting Julian Ward up to speed will be highly important over the next six months. Ward can’t learn on the job.

“It is all about timing. Edwards thinks the time is right now to leave. The club will try and make the transition as smooth as possible.

“If Liverpool can tie up a few contracts a bring a couple of players in before Edwards leaves, fantastic.”
