Gerrard 'mind already made up' on which Aston Villa stars to snub as footage emerges - Mills

Danny Mills has suggested Steven Gerrard may have already made his mind up on members of the Aston Villa squad after holding his first training session.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England full-back suggested if any player has made a bad first impression it will be hard to turn around.

The new Villa boss oversaw his first session on Monday (November 15), as documented on the club’s Twitter account.

A number of the squad are away on international duty but senior players like Ashley Young, Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins were in training at Bodymoor Heath.

“It’s not just because it’s Steven Gerrard, you raise your levels because you want to be in the team,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Those out of the team will think ‘I’ve got a chance, now. If I impress in training then this is a fresh start’.

“Whatever prejudices the previous manager had about the way that you played or the ability you had, that’s gone.

“Those out of the team are thinking they can force their way back in if they work extra hard. Those in the team will be thinking their place isn’t as secure. Everybody raises their level because they all want to be in that starting XI for the first few games.

“If you’re not good in those first few training sessions, it makes it hard to turn that first impression around.

“If you come in with a fantastic attitude from the get-go, Steven Gerrard will look at a player and go ‘I like the look of him, he’s working hard’. That’s what he’ll remember about a player.

“With players out on international duty, the others have got a chance to impress and the manager will have already made up his mind about them.”
