Aston Villa 'definitely' signing two stars in January after source reveal - pundit

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will want to sign two players in the January transfer window, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa and England striker said the 41-year-old will “definitely have been promised funds” by the club’s owners.

On Thursday, Villa announced the appointment of Gerrard on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has told Football Insider that Villa have just £5million worth of wiggle room before they breach Financial Fair Play regulations.

However, that position is expected to significantly improve once the accounts for 2021 are published.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that chief executive Christian Purslow promised Gerrard “huge” funds will be made available in January and next summer.

When asked by Football Insider if he thinks Gerrard will be given a significant transfer budget, Philips said: “I’m sure he wants money to spend.

“The owners are very wealthy so I don’t think funds will be a problem. It will not be a bottomless pit though. Let’s not forget that they have spent a lot of money in recent years.

“Any manager coming in will want to put his stamp on the squad. He will want one or two of his own players in January.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if one or two of the Rangers players are targeted. It will be interesting to see how much he is given and who he targets.

“He will definitely have been promised funds, it’s just a question of how much. Any manager wants those assurances when they come into a club.”
