Darren Bent gushed about Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after the 23-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the Whites’ narrow 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international shared that he thought Phillips should be playing his football in the Premier League rather than the Championship as he claimed the midfield enforcer has all the attributes to succeed in the top-flight.
The 23-year-old scored in the 65th minute of Saturday’s clash, after Jack Harrison noticed him in space, in order to help Leeds mark their centenary with a victory.
Bent pointed out it was fitting that Phillips got the winning goal to help celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary as he is the Whites’ best player before revealing why he thought that was the case.
When asked about how good Phillips is following his goalscoring display against Birmingham City, Bent told Football Insider: “How is this kid not playing in the Premier League as he has all the attributes.
“His technique on the ball, his passing, his game awareness, his tackles, yes sometimes he toes the line with his tackles but that’s for another day.
“His tactical awareness, I just think as an all-round holding midfield player, he’s got absolutely everything, and not only that he can score goals as well, so he’s not just a holding midfield player as he can get forward as well.
“When needs must he can go and get a goal, so it was fitting that yesterday their best player went and got the winning goal.”
Phillips has featured in every one of Leeds’ Championship matches this season and has racked up one goal as well as one assist in the process.
The midfield enforcer is contracted to stay at Elland Road until June 2024 after penning a new long-term contract in September.
