Kevin Phillips insisted it would be a “good deal for both parties” if Chelsea offered West Ham cash plus Fikayo Tomori on loan for Declan Rice this summer.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Tomori, 22, could be the answer to the Hammers defensive problems next season if they avoid relegation.
The Blues may offer Tomori on a season-long loan as part of the deal to try and tempt David Moyes in parting with his prized asset.
The Chelsea defender signed a five-year deal in December so a permanent swap would be highly unlikely.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the potential swap deal, Phillips said: “I think that deal is good for both parties.
“West Ham have not defended well and Tomori has shown that he is a good defender.
“He did a great job at Derby, nearly helped them to the Premier League and has been in and out of the Chelsea side this year.
“Tomori gets regular game time at West Ham and Rice comes in to replace Jorginho because he could be moving on at the end of the season. That could be the perfect position for Declan Rice to slip into.
“I like Rice. He will just get better and better, especially in a better side where he is surrounded by world class players. That would be good business.”
In other West Ham news, it can be REVEALED that Moyes wants to bin Manuel Pellegrini signing he does not trust.
