'Great signing for Celtic' - Exclusive: Whelan blown away by first sighting of international

Noel Whelan was blown away by his first sighting of the “fantastic” Albian Ajeti as he came off the bench to rescue Celtic against Dundee United on Saturday.

The former Leeds United and Aberdeen forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “Neil Lennon knows that he has done a good bit of business” after the 23-year-old’s performance.

Ajeti scored just 10 minutes into his league debut to spare Celtic’s blushes and help them to a 1-0 win over newly promoted Dundee United.

The Switzerland international striker arrived at Parkhead from West Ham just over a week ago and got his first minutes in green and white against KR Reykjavik in midweek.

Whelan claimed that the goal will give the new Hoops recruit a wealth of confidence going forward.

“The goal in itself was huge,” he told Football Insider.

“It looked like one of those games for Celtic where you look back and regret. They were dominating but squandering chances.

“In the end it was great for the player. There is no better feeling than getting the winning goal but on your debut as well – fantastic.

“Ajeti has got that first goal, that monkey is off his back and the pressure has been relieved. That will give him so much confidence going into the next few games and beyond.

“Neil Lennon knows that he has done a good bit of business. They have a player who can hit the back of the net. It seems like a great signing for Celtic. No wonder they were desperate to bring him into Celtic Park.”

When speaking on Ajeti’s cameo, Lennon said: “We got Albi on, he’s not fully fit as you can see but he gives us another attacking option and he comes up with a great winner.

“That will do him the world of good. So it’s been a good day’s work.
