Noel Whelan claimed Jordan Rossiter has “sunk” at Rangers as the midfielder nears his Ibrox departure four years after signing from Liverpool.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted whilst injuries have not helped, the 23-year-old has failed to meet expectations in Glasgow.
Rossiter has spent the season on loan at League One side Fleetwood Town where he has made 19 appearances in all competitions.
The club released a statement last week announcing that the English midfielder would leave at the end of his contract on 31 May.
The Liverpool academy graduate is joined by Jon Flanagan, Jason Holt, Jak Alnwick, Wes Foderigham and fans’ favourite Andy Halliday.
When asked by Football Insider if he has been disappointed by Rossiter’s time at Ibrox, Whelan said: “Injuries have not helped.
“He had a big reputation as a youngster, somebody who could make a path in the game but it has not worked out.
“If people do not hit the heights straight away, pressure can be weird.
“You can have one good season at a club and people think you are the next best thing. But when you go into professional football you soon get found out.
“It is not easy to improve and live up to that reputation. You can sink or you can swim and a lot of players with good reputations have sunk.”
Manager, Steven Gerrard, said: “I want to recognise the contribution of the players who are leaving our squad at the end of this season.”
Rossiter only mustered 16 appearances for the Gers but was hampered by frequent calf injuries since arriving on a free transfer in 2016.
