'He needs to go' - Exclusive: Whelan urges West Ham to offload int'l after big development

Noel Whelan has claimed that West Ham defender Winston Reid “needs” to leave the club as soon as possible.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that the New Zealand international desperately needs to get some first team football under his belt.

As revealed by Football Insider, a proposed move to the MLS club Nashville fell through last week, but David Moyes has suggested that a second American club could be in line to snap up the 31-year-old on loan.

Reid has not played competitively for the Irons since picking up a knee ligament injury in a Premier League clash with Swansea City in March 2018, and Nolan insists that he has to seal his exit.

“First and foremost, it’s important for the player,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s had a lengthy spell out. He needs to get back playing.

“But it might be a case that it’s good for player and club because they might get him off the books. They might not want to keep him. We don’t know how important he is to West Ham, but he needs be playing football.

“If he’s not going to be in the reckoning then he needs to go out. There’s no point sitting on a bench or playing U23 games – you want to be playing competitive football.

“It’s strange that he’s going to the MLS, he’s probably got more to offer in the Championship and he could do a job for somebody because he’s got all that experience behind him, but I’m sure the player has a say on where he wants to go.”

Reid has clocked up 223 appearances for the Hammers in all competitions, registering 10 goals and 10 assists in the process.

The centre-back arrived in east London from Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2010.
