Rubbish - Exclusive: Hutton scoffs as Rangers star man makes big Celtic claim

Alan Hutton has scoffed at Jermain Defoe’s claim about next season and insisted the main focus of the Rangers stars is stopping Celtic.

The former Gers defender and lifelong fan at Ibrox, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that the veteran striker was being diplomatic when he shrugged off the importance of preventing 10-in-a-row.

Speaking to talkSPORT about the Gers’ title hopes next season, Defoe claims the focus is solely on winning a title and “not about stopping Celtic.”

However, Hutton insists that fans want nothing more than to stop their fiercest rivals from a historic milestone and admits it is going to be a tough task for Gerrard’s men.

Hutton told Football Insider: “Oh, in my opinion, it is about stopping Celtic next season. I understand from a Rangers point of view you have to say the correct thing, I totally get that, but now that I’m a fan, it’s about stopping 10-in-a-row.

“I think if you were to ask Gerrard would you want a cup win or whatever or do you want to stop Celtic winning the league, that’s all he would take, he’d bite your hand off for it.

“That’s the main aim, there’s a lot of pressure on them next season, it’s huge, they just have to go out and give their all, they need a full squad of winners who believe they can stop them.”

Rangers were 13 points behind Celtic, with a game in hand, when the Premiership season was ended early due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Hoops have three-consecutive domestic trebles to their name and could seal a fourth if this season’s Scottish Cup is completed.

In other Rangers news, Hutton has lauded the club’s plans for a “nightmare” attacker.
