Darren Bent has tipped Newcastle United to beat West Ham to the signing of Manchester United defender Phil Jones this summer.
The former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 28-year-old would prefer a move to St James’ Park rather than the London Stadium.
The Mirror report that Steve Bruce and David Moyes are keen on signing the 27-cap England international for £12million this summer after his lack of game time at Old Trafford.
Bent believes that the Magpies offer a more attractive option to the versatile enforcer at the moment, insisting he would be a great signing for Bruce’s men.
“He’s got pedigree, Premier League experience, he’s obviously maybe gone and lost his way at Manchester United,” Bent told Football Insider.
“For Steve Bruce, he’d be a great signing, defensively strong, I think he’d do very, very well at Newcastle – experience, bit of solidity. He’s a northerner so you’d have to say he’d probably go to Newcastle (over West Ham).
“Looking at the two squads, right now you’d have to say Newcastle because they’re further up the league, they look quite comfortable from relegation so you’d probably say there.
“I think he can make them stronger, West Ham you just don’t know what you’re going to get there. Steve Bruce being a defensive-minded coach, being a centre-half himself, I think I’d be more inclined to go there.”
Preston-born Jones has just eight appearances under his belt this season, two of which have come as starts in the Premier League.
In other Newcastle United news, Darren Bent has called a transfer development at St James’ Park a “killer” for the Magpies.
