Alex McLeish has insisted Steven Gerrard will not be fazed at the prospect of managing in the Premier League as Leeds United eye up the Rangers boss.
The former Gers and Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has lauded the job the 40-year-old has done at Ibrox and has tipped the Glasgow giants for some glory this season.
It is understood the Liverpool legend was top of Leeds’ shortlist back in 2019 after the club missed out on promotion and Bielsa’s future was thrust up in the air.
McLeish has admitted the current Leeds boss would leave big boots to fill but that Gerrard will be confident of his ability to manage among England’s elite clubs.
McLeish told Football Insider: “Well, you know there would be different methods, Bielsa being much more experienced than Steven and having coached many, many clubs, so it’s a hell of a CV.
“For Steven to go right in there and being linked with Premier League job, why not? You know, Rangers is a huge club and to be elevated to a bigger league – I’m not saying a bigger club, because he has been at the biggest of all at Liverpool and Rangers.
“A Rangers manager who’s doing a good job, and I know Steven’s not won a trophy yet – this is surely going to be his season – but I think the work that he’s done has been recognised, and the building that he’s done has been gradual.
“There’s no way that the Premier League will faze Steven Gerrard. The question is can he take the managerial level to a higher plane?”
