‘He’s been our best player’ - Newcastle fans rage on Twitter as attacker is axed v Swansea

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has dropped Christian Atsu from the staring XI against Swansea – and the club’s supporters are furious on Twitter with the decision.

The Magpies have made two changes to their side away to Swansea from the team that beat West Ham 3-0 in their last game.

Atsu and Chancel Mbemba are the players to drop out, with Jesus Gamez and Jacob Murphy taking their place in the starting line-up.

Atsu has completed 90 minutes in the first three Premier League games of the season, but Benitez has decided to alter his team for the trip to the Liberty Stadium.

Newcastle fans were angry on social media with the decision to bench the 25-year-old and some feel he has been their best player so far this season.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Atsu played a big role in helping Newcastle secure promotion from the Championship last season and started the new campaign as a mainstay in the team.

The versatile winger picked up an assist in his last game and his pace has become a big asset to the side.

However, he did play twice during the international break for Ghana and fans have suggested that is why he is only fit enough for the bench against Swansea.

Newcastle will be looking to build some momentum after the West Ham win and a positive result away at the Swans will give them a major lift.

Benitez’s position at St James’ Park has come under question in the early stages of the season and the manager has been frustrated with his side’s lack of transfer activity.

However, the Spaniard will now have to work with what he has got until at least the January window and they showed against the Hammers they have the players to compete in the top flight.
