Danny Mills has poked fun at himself in tearing into the performance of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and England international claimed that the Swiss international had “a Danny Mills” against the Lilywhites after he conceded a penalty for Spurs’ second goal of the game.
The Gunner managed to fight back and seal a point in the first north London derby of the season, goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ensuring bragging rights were shared.
However, Mills was left unimpressed by Xhaka’s display and insisted it was not the first time he had failed to live up to expectation in the middle of the park, highlighting his mixed displays during his time at Arsenal.
Mills told Football Insider: “He’s had a Danny Mills, hasn’t he? A shocker, one of those.
“It wasn’t Xhaka’s greatest day. I’ve seen him saw some great goals and seen him have the odd great 30 minutes but I’ve never seen him have three or four games where I think: ‘Yes, he’s outstanding.’
“I can’t see why they paid all that money for him a long time ago. Maybe it’s just me, I just can’t see it. Every now and then you see the quality, but he doesn’t do it often enough.”
Xhaka has played a total of 137 times for the Gunners during his time at the Emirates Stadium, with three appearances in the club’s four Premier League outings this season.
The shared points mean that Arsenal sit fifth in the top flight as they head into the international break, while Spurs find themselves two points behind in ninth.
In other Arsenal and Tottenham news, Mills has told Football Insider he was stunned by an “incredible” claim in the build-up to Sunday’s clash.
