Kevin Phillips has dismissed Everton winger Richarlison comments comparing his teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the 1999/2000 European golden shoe winner claimed the Brazilian may have had “a bit too much sugar”.
Calvert-Lewin scored on his England debut against Wales on Thursday night and his Toffees’ teammate believes his call up was fully deserved.
Richarlison told the FIFA website: “He’s transformed into a complete striker. I remember when I got here he was nothing like the player he is today.
“He’s had a superb start to the season and without doubt deserved his England call-up. He must be a nightmare to play against and he has an incredible leap on him like Cristiano Ronaldo.”
However, Phillips believes the 23-year-old is overreacting comparing Calvert-Lewin to the Portuguese legend.
He told Football Insider: “Richarlison in the week likened him to Ronaldo.
“I think he might have to look at himself in the mirror! Calvert-Lewin is good but I don’t think he’s in the Ronaldo mould just yet.
“He might have had a bit too much sugar intake when he said that!”
Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin have been vital to Everton’s 100% start to the season that sees them at the top of the Premier League.
The pair have scored 13 goals and provided two assists across all competitions so far this campaign.
Calvert-Lewin has nine of those goals including two hattricks in his last two games at Goodison Park.
