Kevin Campbell fears Ainsley-Maitland Niles will be increasingly frustrated with his lack of game time at Arsenal.
The former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said Mikel Arteta’s Premier League team selection must be driving the 23-year-old “up the wall”.
Maitland-Niles was named on the bench for the third consecutive game on Saturday as Arsenal climbed to 11th in the table with a 4-0 victory over West Brom.
The England international has not started since his standout performance at Goodison Park in December with Hector Bellerin clearly preferred on the right-hand side of the defence.
In all competitions this season, Maitland-Niles has started 12 games but just four of those have come in the league.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Bellerin’s performances of late, Campbell said: “Bellerin has done OK in the past few games.
“I would not say he has been brilliant but he has done OK.
“I think Maitland-Niles played very well against Everton but Bellerin has been back in the side since Chelsea. That was a really good win and Maitland-Niles has found himself out in the cold again.
“It’s really strange because I thought he was Arsenal’s top performer against Everton. I do not know what was going on at the football club.
“If it is frustrating for me I can only imagine what it is like for Maitland-Niles. It must be driving him up the wall.”
