'His contacts book is like the Yellow Pages' - Hutton verdict as Celtic open Harkin talks

Fergal Harkin would be an “excellent appointment” as the new director of football at Celtic, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Manchester City transfer guru would have a “contacts book like the Yellow Pages”.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic have opened talks with Harkin over the director of football role at Parkhead and they are close to a deal.

The 44-year-old is currently the football partnership manager at Manchester City and has spent over 11 years in various recruitment and scouting roles.

It is understood Harkin could bring a team of analysts and recruitment experts from the Premier League giants if appointed.

Hutton insisted Celtic need a rebuild and suggested the Manchester City man would be “fantastic” in turning the ship around at Parkhead.

Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “His contacts book would be like the Yellow Pages, wouldn’t it?

“He’s very highly thought of in the world of football. He’ll know all the up and coming talent, he’ll know where to go to get it.

“I just think somebody with his experience, his contacts, his knowledge of the youth side of it. These are the players that Rangers and Celtic will be looking for.

“To bring someone with that experience when it’s time for a rebuild would be absolutely fantastic for Celtic. That’s coming from a Rangers fan.

“It doesn’t surprise me they’re after him. Whether it happens, we’ll wait and see, but I think it’d be an excellent appointment.”

In other news, McAvennie can’t believe how Celtic are treating “brilliant talent”.
