Noel Whelan has slammed Vurnon Anita as a “huge waste of money” as he severed his ties with Leeds United today.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed that the Holland international, 30, had proved poor value for the three-year contract he was handed by the club in the summer of 2017.
As revealed by Football Insider, Anita had been training away from the senior squad at Leeds’ Thorp Arch headquarters after being deemed surplus to requirements, and the club announced today they had agreed to cancel his contract by “mutual consent”.

The termination means United will have pay a significant sum of the former Newcastle United man for the final year of his agreement, which was due to expire next summer.
“Sad to say, but Anita has been a huge waste of money,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I know he joined on a free but he was handed a good contract because he joined as a big-name player who’s played for Holland and over 100 times in the Premier League.
“That experience has proved to be irrelevant. Marcelo Bielsa had a look at him and knew the club had better central midfielders and better full-backs. There were better players in the youth team.
“It was obvious a season ago he wouldn’t cut it at Leeds and that’s why he was unable to find a new club this summer. If he was good enough, he would have been signed by now.”
Anita joined Leeds from Newcastle on a free after playing 106 times for them in the Premier League for Newcastle United and being a key member of the side that secure promotion from the Championship three seasons ago.
