Hugo Lloris identifies where Tottenham failed this season
By Harvey Byrne
Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris believes the Tottenham team will only improve following the “failure” of their Champions League campaign this season.
The north London club are currently battling for the Premier League title and are also heading into an FA Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea this weekend.
However, their time in Europe was less than successful and they ended up being knocked out of the elite competition at the group stage with two wins, one draw and three defeats leaving them in third place.
This has led to star Lloris labelling their European ventures as a “failure,” but he believes his team can only improve.
“A winning mentality is already in this team — we just need some chances and opportunities, and we have a few before the end of the season,” told Lloris to ESPN.

“When you have a chance, you have to take it. It’s true that at some other clubs, in England, France, Spain, Italy or Germany, they are used to winning a lot of trophies. It was the case 50 years ago, it was the case 20 years ago and it will be the case in a few years. Because they are big institutions and all the players respect those institutions. That’s the way to follow, but you cannot arrive one day and say: ‘I want to change everything,’ and then win. You need to take time, build up something strong step-by-step, and you need to live through experiences like last season. Even like this season — in the Champions League it was a failure but we need to go through this kind of moment to improve. It’s a process.”
Lloris, 30, played all six of the club’s Champions League games this season, but he was powerless conceding six goals, while keeping just two clean sheets.
He has found better form in the Premier League behind a strong Tottenham defensive unit, but the club will now be keen to establish themselves against the European super clubs.
However, the team’s immediate aim will be to progress to the final of the FA Cup while keeping within the running for the league title.
