Alan Hutton claims Sergio Romero can push Jordan Pickford for the number one spot at Everton.

The former Tottenham defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the Toffees' hunt for a new number two.

The 96-time Argentina international is available on a free transfer this summer.

Robin Olsen has returned to AS Roma upon the expiry of his loan deal, leaving Everton without a senior number two.

When asked if Romero could be a bargain signing for Everton, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, "Yeah, I think so.

"Romero has enough experience to push Pickford. If there was ever an opportunity to come in he has the know-how to do well.

"Pickford has been up and down at times in his career but on the whole, he's done really well.

"For me, he stays as the number one. It's up to Romero or whoever it may be to push him forward.

"You never really want someone who's happy to be a number two. You need them to be able to push whoever's in front.

"Bringing in someone with that experience is only good for himself and for Pickford."

Romero made 61 appearances for Manchester United after joining the club in 2015.

Pickford is yet to concede for England at this summer's European Championship after another clean sheet against Ukraine on Saturday.
