Alan Hutton has blasted Nuno Espirito Santo for taking a "risk" on his Tottenham team selection against Vitesse Arnhem and West Ham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender admitted the Lilywhites were "shocking" in Europe and "flat" against the Irons.

Spurs lost 1-0 away to both Vitesse and West Ham.

The entire starting XI who beat Newcastle 3-2 were left at home for the trip to Arnhem.

They all returned for the visit to the London Stadium to face the Irons.

West Ham also came into the game off the back of a European tie.

However, they beat Genk 3-0, with five players starting both games.

Hutton slammed both performances from Spurs and insisted Nuno took a gamble leaving his star men behind in Europe.

"I covered the Vitesse game and I thought it was a risk to leave the whole starting XI at home," Hutton told Football Insider's Russell Edge.

"If you want to rest players, I understand that, that's fine but have them on the bench with you. Bring them on to change the game if you need to.

"They were so poor, they were shocking against Vitesse. I was sitting there thinking: 'Oh my, I can't believe I have to cover this.' It was that bad.

"To move on to the West Ham game, you've got your starting XI back and they looked flat. It was a flat performance. Harry Kane had hardly any touches, second half not a shot on goal.

"You would expect them to overrun West Ham. They had a game midweek and they played a strong team. Really poor. A risk that did not pay off."
