Morgan Sanson’s revelation Leeds United were keen on signing him before Aston Villa is further proof of his calibre.
That is according to Alan Hutton, who told Football Insider that Dean Smith has got his hands on a “very good” midfielder if the Whites were keen.
However, Sanson admitted he did not feel it was the right time to leave Ligue 1.
He eventually secured a Premier League move in January as he joined Aston Villa for an initial £14million.
Despite having not seen much of the midfielder, Hutton insisted Leeds’ pursuit was enough to get Villa supporters excited.
Asked what Leeds’ interest could tell us about Sanson, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Oh, 100 per cent he’s got a good engine on him.
“I mean, we know that Leeds don’t tend to just jump to buy anybody. It seems like they take their time, they watch them through a number of games.
“They’ll look at the stats – every single stat that he’s got – and then they work from there.
“If Bielsa’s keen, you know he must be a decent player and they have taken the time to look at all aspects of his game.
“Obviously Villa have a very good player there and it’s just about the timing and when he comes into to the team.
“We need to wait and see in upcoming games. If he does get games, then we can really judge.”
