Hutton excited by Rangers starlet getting 'rave reviews' after what he's heard from McAllister

Alan Hutton has admitted he is excited to see how young midfielder Stephen Kelly performs with the senior Rangers side in pre-season.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, named the 21-year-old as his one to watch following the 1-0 win over Partick Thistle.

Speaking to Rangers TV after Monday’s victory, assistant manager Gary McAllister singled the 21-year-old out for praise.

McAllister lauded Kelly’s development and suggested his impressive performances out on loan warranted his call-up to the senior Rangers side.

The promising midfielder spent last season at Ross County, while he had a temporary spell at Ayr United.

Asked which youngster’s he thought would be ones to watch this summer, Hutton admitted he was excited about Kelly’s potential.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I know it’s only one game but Stephen Kelly’s getting rave reviews already.

“I knew about him before, he had some good loan spells, he was at Ayr and then Ross County. He’s the one that I think the fans are kind of looking towards.

“The likes of Nathan Patterson are out this conversation. I see him as a first-team player. Breaking through, I think he’s (Kelly) the name.

“Gary Mac (McAllister) did that nice interview after the game, speaking very highly about him and saying he’s ready to start pushing.

“It’ll be interesting to see how that develops. Does he step up at a club on loan at a higher level?

Or is he ready to take that big leap into the first team so it’ll be interesting to see how it works out.”

Kelly made 29 appearances across all competitions for Ross County last term.

His one and only Rangers appearance came as a substitute in the Scottish League Cup against Ayr United in 2018.
