Pundit Exclusive: January transfer may be off the table after Ibrox agreement

Alan Hutton has tipped Rangers to block a move for Alfredo Morelos in January despite having agreed to sell him at a set price over the summer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers and Scotland defender has suggested that the Light Blues will take the agreement off the table until the end of the campaign.

Wilson confirmed to Rangers TV that the club had told the 24-year-old they would let him leave Ibrox over the summer transfer window if a club met their valuation.

However, the Colombia stayed in Glasgow past the end of the window and has played regularly for Gerrard’s men in both the Premiership and the Europa League this season.

Hutton has insisted that a fit and firing Morelos could be the difference in the title race this season and that the club would be loathed to lose him in the winter window.

Asked if he thought Rangers would put their agreement on hold over January, Hutton told Football Insider: “Exactly. I said to you at the start of the season if you can get a fit Morelos and his head right, he can be the difference between winning the league and not winning the league.

“I still agree with that – yes, there’s competition up front but you need to have him there because he will score goals. After having such a good first half of the season, why would you let somebody then go?

“Why would you not say to them: ‘Give me another five months or whatever it is, get your head down, work hard, let’s win this league and then we’ll talk in the summer.’ I think that would be an ideal situation for everyone.

“You don’t want to leave halfway through a season. This could be such a massive, important time. If Rangers win the league, this will go down in history so wouldn’t you want to be part of that for the sake of five months?

“That’s how I’d be playing it: ‘Give me your best five months, we’ll speak in the summer.'”

Wilson told Rangers TV: “We had interest in Alfredo and we had an agreement that if there was a club that met a valuation that we had in mind then we would look at that.

“That valuation wasn’t met and we rejected some offers for him because they didn’t meet that valuation and he remains with us going forward and we will see what the future holds for him.”
