Hutton: I'm told Gerrard 'bursting' to work with McGinn at Aston Villa after 'conversation'

Steven Gerrard will be “bursting” to work with John McGinn after taking over as Aston Villa manager, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Villa and Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the pair would be buzzing at the prospect of working together.

The Scotland star was absent for Gerrard’s first days of training as Villa boss due to his international commitments.

The midfielder played the full 180 minutes as Scotland beat both Moldova and Denmark.

With McGinn set to return to training ahead of this weekend’s game against Brighton, Hutton insisted Gerrard would be getting excited.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “That was one of the first things I said, Steven Gerrard is bursting to meet John and I think it’ll be the same the other way. It’s a conversation I’ve had.

“Steven Gerrard when you look at the likes of Rangers, John fits that mould of player that he loves. He loves midfielders who are combative, can get about the pitch, can make things happen.

“John does all those things at such a high level. I’m pretty sure he will be really looking forward to working with him.”

McGinn has established himself as a star for both club and country since joining the Villans from Hibernian.

He has missed just one of Villa’s 11 Premier League games this season.

Primarily played as a defensive midfielder by Dean Smith, the Scottish ace has scored twice this season.

He has made a total of 121 appearances for Villa, scoring 15 goals and contributing 20 assists.
