Hutton makes 'huge' prediction about Rangers starlet Mayo after what he's heard from Gerrard
Lewis Mayo has a “huge opportunity” to break into the Rangers first team during pre-season, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he knows Steven Gerrard is a “big admirer” of the young defender.
The 21-year-old started and played the first 45 minutes Rangers’ first pre-season game against Partick Thistle on Monday.
Mayo was one of several academy graduates to feature as Gerrard made 10 changes at half time during the 1-0 win.
The promising centre-back feature in a defensive midfield role as George Edmundson and Jack Simpson line up at the heart of defence.
Hutton suggested Mayo would be one to watch during pre-season as Gerrard runs the rule over his young starlets.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The young boys are in this squad for the manager to have a look at them.
“Does they go out on loan? Or does he want them to stay in the squad for the season? This is massive, a huge opportunity for the likes of Mayo.
“He’s trying to push his way into that first team. He played defensive midfielder but he’s a centre half so there’s that opportunity.
“Come into the first team, show us what you’ve got in a real situation. Then they’ll decide how you progress. It’s a huge opportunity.
“I know from people at Rangers Gerrard is an admirer of Lewis Mayo, he likes what he sees. It’s up to him to prove to him he’s ready to step up into the first team.”
Mayo is yet to make his competitive debut for Rangers.
He spent much of last season on loan at Dunfermline, where he made 26 appearances.
