Peterborough United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris could be an “unbelievable” Alfredo Morelos replacement at Rangers.

That is the view of former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old had proven himself at a “good standard”.

As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers sent scouts to watch Clarke-Harris as he netted a hat-trick for Peterborough against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

He has been identified as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos should he leave Ibrox in the summer.

Clarke-Harris joined the Posh last summer for a fee of around £1.25million to replace Brentford-bound Ivan Toney.

The Leicester-born hitman has had no trouble filling his predecessor’s boots, with 25 goals in 37 league games.

An experienced League One campaigner, the hitman has scored 66 goals in 191 third-tier appearances.

Hutton admitted he was blown away by Clarke-Harris’ form and suggested he could replace Morelos at Ibrox.

Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “I’ll tell you what, they can find a striker, can Peterborough. They love a goalscorer. Unbelievable.

“For Ivan Toney to leave and his replacement to score 25 goals, that’s unbelievable. I think the thing we need to remember is that’s a good level of football.

“Some people might look at it, be a bit snobby over it and say: ‘Oh, that’s not the best.’ but we’ve played a lot of those teams throughout cup games, pre-season games, and they’re of a good standard.

“To be scoring that amount of goals at that level, I think anybody would be happy to see that link.

“I think a lot of it comes down to what’s going to happen with Morelos, if I’m totally honest. We all know the situation surrounding him and what has been said over the past couple of seasons.

“He’s kind of wanted to leave at certain times within that spell. However, if he does go, we can imagine it’s going to be for a decent sum of money. Then Rangers, rightly so, will be looking, scouring the market to try and find a replacement.

“If this guy can come up and score those goals, I think everybody will be more than happy.”
