Hutton thrilled by 'brilliant' Aston Villa ambition after £18m Bentancur bid update

Alan Hutton has insisted Aston Villa are showing “serious” ambition after tabling a bid to sign Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

The former Villa defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 24-year-old would be a “brilliant” signing to add quality and competition in the middle of the park.

As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday (25 January), Villa were set to submit an offer of around £18million for the Juve star last night.

This site understands Bentancur is very keen to join the Midlands outfit.

However, Juventus want to sign a replacement before letting the Uruguay international leave.

Hutton insisted the 45-cap midfielder’s capture would be a real statement of intent from Villa.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It shows you the direction that they see themselves going in, that these are the type of targets they’re going for now.

“It’s not that they can’t get them and they’re throwing names out there, they’re very serious. They’re very serious about what they’re trying to do in the future.

“When these big targets are linked with Villa or speaking to Villa, they say: ‘I can see what is happening. There is a project here to go and challenge.’

“To have a player like Bentancur to be just spoken about with Aston Villa is brilliant. If they could get someone like that, he is still very young and played at such a high level.

“To add competition to that defensive midfield department, it is just brilliant. It really just shows you the direction that they are travelling in at the moment.”

Bentancur has played 181 times for Juventus since joining from Boca Juniors in 2017.

He has made 26 appearances across all competitions this season.
