Marcel Sabitzer could replace the likes of Dele Alli and Lucas Moura at Tottenham if signed from RB Leipzig, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Jose Mourinho may see the “fantastic” attacking midfielder as the missing piece of his puzzle.
As reported by German publication Bild, the Portuguese boss is keen on signing the 27-year-old after he impressed in their Champions League clash last season.
Sabitzer netted twice against Spurs in Leipzig’s 2-0 win in Germany and helped the Bundesliga side reach the semi-finals.
He is said to have already told Leipzig he wants to quit this summer and is valued at £35.8million (€42million) by the club.
Despite already having several attacking midfielders in north London, Hutton suggested Sabitzer could be worth the big-money fee.
Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “He’s a fantastic player. I managed to watch him a few times against Tottenham and I think he’s excellent.
“It’s a lot of money, but I think it’s probably an area where Mourinho’s identified he wants somebody in. Whether that means Dele Alli moves on, he’s tried Lucas Moura in that number 10 role too.
“He’s tried Ndombele there, he’s tried all sorts of different options in that position and it hasn’t really worked. Maybe Mourinho sees him as the suitable replacement for all of them that’s going to make the team better.
“Maybe he’s seen this Sabitzer guy, seen him up close, come up against him and thinks: ‘This is the guy. He’s got all the qualities I want in attacking midfield.’
“Whether it be £35million, one year, two years left, he sees it as that’s the guy he wants.”
