Kevin Phillips has tipped Liverpool to sign Jack Grealish if Aston Villa are relegated this season.
The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the 24-year-old is “certain” to quit Villa if they failed to survive the drop.
Jurgen Klopp has a history of signing players from relegated clubs in recent years – Georginio Wijnaldum, Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri all coming under that umbrella.
Grealish has been a rare success story in an otherwise difficult season for Dean Smith’s side, who are two points adrift of safety.
When asked if the league leaders would have their eye on any players that could potentially be relegated this season, Phillips told Football Insider: “Liverpool are at a point where they can splash out on the world’s best.
“Those world’s best players want to come and play for Liverpool and Klopp. He plays a certain style and he will not buy someone unless it plays his system.
“The obvious one is Jack Grealish. If Villa go down I am certain he will move on. Could he play for Liverpool? He is the only one out of the bottom three or four teams that could fit in that team.
“They will certainly be targeting players from top abroad teams and around the world.”
Grealish has scored nine goals and contributed eight assists in his 31 appearances this season.
Villa are languishing in 19th place with the Premier League suspended until April 4 due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
In other Liverpool news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider whether Adrian will be at Anfield next season.
