Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a major force in the Premier League as he takes further steps on his path to world-class status, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and Coventry City striker is convinced Alexander-Arnold can be one of the outstanding players in the English top flight next season.

Whelan was blown away by the Liverpool 20-year-old’s performances against Barcelona and Wolves last week as the team reached the Champions League final in sensational fashion and pushed Manchester City all the way in an epic title race.

Alexander-Arnold’s quick corner kick set up Divock Origi for the decisive goal as Liverpool came from 3-0 after the first leg to overcome Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield in a semi-final that’s gone down as the club’s greatest-ever comeback.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It was so clever and quick thinking, as well as brilliantly executed, that all the Barcelona players were caught out.

“What a player he (Alexander-Arnold) is. There’s no doubt he will be even better next season and become one of the best players in the Premier League as well as in Europe over the next few years.

“I’m not sure he will end up at right-back, but he is winning games from there with his crossing and overlaps, so [Jurgen] Klopp will not want to move him.”

Alexander-Arnold followed up his masterclass in the Champions League by setting up both of Sadio Mane’s goals as Liverpool ended their Premier League campaign five days later with a 2-0 win over Wolves.

The Anfield academy product set a new Premier League record for a defender of 12 assists this season and, in all competitions, he laid on a remarkable 16 goals.
