'I expected more' - Exclusive: Whelan casts doubts over future of Everton starlet

Noel Whelan is unimpressed with the start Moise Kean has made to life at Everton but feels the teenager should be afforded “time to settle in” at Goodison Park.

The ex-Leeds and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, cast doubts over whether the 19-year-old had the potential to be a prolific striker in the future.

The Italy international put pen to paper on a five-year deal in the summer after the Toffees agreed on a £27.5million deal with Juventus for his services.

The striker has endured a difficult start to life on Merseyside, making only five starts in the Premier League. In December, the youngster was substituted 18 minutes after coming on by then caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson.

Kean scored his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle last week, having failed to find the net in his previous 18 appearances.

When asked if Moise Kean could kick on from here, Whelan told Football Insider: “I have got to say I am very undecided with the player. I expected more from him when he signed. He has not hit the ground running at Everton.

“I have always questioned whether he is going to get you 20 goals a season, but he needs time to settle into new life. He is very young; he has got time.

“Right now he is not going to be getting you 20. He needs to learn the English game and probably some more time to settle in. He would not be my first-choice striker, put it that way.”

Carlo Ancelotti claimed he tried to sign Kean during his time in charge of Napoli and the former Chelsea boss’ admiration is clear with the teenager starting three of the last four Premier League matches.

In other Everton news, Kevin Phillips claims it is time for international midfielder to leave Goodison Park.
