'I hate to see that' - Exclusive: Whelan savages West Brom 'Cheat' who started v Huddersfield
Noel Whelan has blasted West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira for trying to “cheat” his way to victory in recent games.
The former Leeds United striker and Championship expert, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 24-year-old is a top talent but admits he “hates” the way he dives and over-exaggerates things.
Pereira started West Brom’s clash against Huddersfield on Friday and delivered the free-kick which led to the Baggies’ equaliser in the first half.
However, he fell to the floor after a minor brush with Trevor Chalobah in an off-the-ball incident, while he was left rolling around after a pat on the head from Fulham’s Michael Hector earlier in the week.
Whelan insists that the Brazilian is “cheating” through his behaviour and admits he hopes the attacking star can find a way to stamp it out of his game.
Whelan told Football Insider: “That’s one part of his makeup that I guess we’ll have to put up with. It’s just the way he is but take nothing away from him, he is their star man.

“Hopefully players like that will learn – Benrahma did it the other night as well, I hate to see that. They’re good enough players not to have to try and cheat.
“That’s all it is when it comes down to it at the end of the day – it’s cheating, trying to get a free-kick or a foul or a penalty or someone else booked. It’s not the way I like to see the game played.”
Pereira has played 42 times across all competitions this season and has been a crucial attacking outlet for Slaven Bilic, with eight goals and 20 assists to his name.
He initially joined the Baggies on loan from Sporting CP last summer and will turn the move permanent at the end of the season after triggering an appearance clause.
In other West Brom news, Football Insider has delivered a major Grady Diangana update.
