'I wouldn't look if I was a Villa player' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips reacts to telling reveal

Kevin Phillips urges Aston Villa players to ignore the stat which suggests home advantage has been non-existent for Bundesliga sides since they returned behind-closed-doors.

The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed home advantage, without fans, was as little as 55/45 in favour of the hosts.

The Bundesliga restarted on 16 May and the 27 games played to date have resulted in only five home wins – suggesting home advantage is redundant without fans.

It was announced today that the Premier League will return on 17 June with Dean Smith’s side hosting Sheffield United at Villa Park.

However, Phillips believes the location of the game is verging on irrelevant in the context of the fixture.

“All the clubs were against neutral venues,” he told Football Insider.

“You always have a slight advantage being at home but the biggest advantage is the supporters. They can be intimidating and get right behind you.

“I would be inclined not to look at that stat if I was a Villa player.

“If you are an away team now going to an empty ground it is 55/45 in favour of the home team.

“All of these away players know the away grounds inside out and know what it entails.

“It may be a slight concern. A lot of these players have never seen the ground empty other than for promotional stuff.”

Out of their remaining 10 fixtures, Villa have six home games to play, the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal still to travel to Villa Park this season.

The Claret and Blue are currently 19th in the Premier League, two points off safety with a game in hand over their relegation rivals.

In other Aston Villa news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider club would already be relegated if it was not for this player.
