Jackie McNamara has admitted he is baffled by Rangers securing a loan move for Leicester City midfielder Andy King this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international says that the Gers already look as though they have enough options in the middle of the park, with the likes of Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield and Glen Kamara on their books.
Despite that, the Gers have confirmed the temporary capture of King, the 30-year-old having been sent to Swansea City and Derby County on loan in recent seasons.
McNamara revealed he does not understand the thinking behind the Gers’ move for the 30-year-old, insisting there are other areas of the squad which need strengthening first.
“Rangers have got many midfielders at the moment. I don’t think that’s a position they’re very light in,” McNamara told Football Insider.
“They need different positions there rather than in the midfield, it’s a very strange one they’d go for another midfielder.
“Only Gerrard knows, he’s not played a lot of football at Leicester, so he’ll know something about him because we’ve not seen him for the last couple of seasons.”
King only played five first-team games last season, an ankle injury cutting short his loan spell at Derby after featuring once for Leicester in the FA Cup.
The 50-cap Wales international has 94 Premier League and 205 Championship appearances under his belt, having played 375 times for the Foxes.
