Ibrox Exclusive: McNamara reacts as Rangers agree 'Important' exit deal for 19/20

Jackie McNamara says Jamie Murphy’s loan from Rangers to Burton Albion is “important” for the player after his long-term injury layoff.

The former Celtic and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the former Brighton winger has a lot of competition for playing time at Ibrox and that a move away should do him good.

The League One side confirmed the capture of the 30-year-old on Monday, Murphy returning to a league where he has nearly 100 games of experience under his belt already.

Having made just two appearances totalling 57 minutes for Steven Gerrard this season, McNamara says that getting out somewhere where he can play will help boost his chances of forging a future in Glasgow.

“Yeah, I think that’s an important thing for him, to get that, to get the game time,” McNamara told Football Insider.

“For the numbers ( of options at Rangers), to get back playing, that’s the most important thing.”

Murphy missed nearly all of last season with a cruciate ligament injury picked up in a Scottish League Cup clash with Kilmarnock back in August 2018, having featured eight times in all competitions.

The versatile winger, who has two Scotland caps under his belt, made his return in the 5-0 win over Hamilton in October 2019, while he also came on as a substitute against Ross County later that same month.
