Oldham Athletic have failed to respond after George Edmundson handed in a transfer request and told the club he wants to quit and sign for Rangers, Football Insider understands.

Edmundson, 21, handed in transfer request at Oldham last weekend after the League Two club rejected two bids from Rangers for his services.

A Rangers source has told Football Insider the second bid is in excess of £500,000 plus add-ons for the highly-rated defender, but it has been rejected by Oldham.

Edmundson is being chased by a number of clubs this summer after impressing for Oldham in League Two in a season that ended with him scooping the club's Player of the Year award and being named in the EFL League Two Team of the Year.

Rangers are hopeful they can win the race to sign the 6ft 3in defender with Football Insider being told they are in pole position to land the defender ahead of his other suitors, including Peterborough, partly due to the player's eagerness to make the move.

Oldham are reluctant to lose Edmundson despite him entering the final year of his contract at Boundary Park.

The fourth-tier club's failure to respond to his transfer request is frustrating Rangers  as they look to make the defender another of their early-window arrivals.
