Noel Whelan has tipped Rangers to launch a raid for Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney if they sell Alfredo Morelos this summer.
The former Leeds and Aberdeen forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Colombian’s exit could see the Gers bolster their side with a number of new signings.
As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday, Rangers are in advanced talks to sell the 24-year-old striker for £17million to Ligue 1 outfit Lille.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Rangers are in pursuit of Peterborough ace Toney, although Brentford have had a £5million bid accepted by the League One side.
Whelan believes that the money gained from Morelos’ departure would be spent on improving the side and suggests that the 26-goal hotshot could fill the void up front.
Whelan told Football Insider: “You’re just hoping Steven Gerrard’s got someone in line, they’ve been linked with Toney, Ivan Toney, so he’ll probably get him for a lot cheaper which means there’s money to spare.
“You can go out and get Toney for what, £5-6million, and then have £10million left over that I’m sure they’re going to put it all out there on the field.
“They’re going to need players to go and challenge Celtic this season so it might free up that money to go and get another two or three players that’s going to help them challenge.”
Toney has scored 49 times in 96 appearances for Peterborough after he joined the Posh from Newcastle back in 2018.
Morelos meanwhile has 77 goals to his name at Ibrox, 29 of which came last season.
In other Rangers news, the club have been urged to sign a £2million-rated forward who has ‘given Celtic nightmares’.
