Rangers have joined Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough in the hunt to sign former star Josh Windass from Wigan this summer, Football Insider understands.

The 26-year-old left Glasgow to join the Latics back in 2018 but spent the second half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Wednesday.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Gers are looking at bringing the versatile attacker back to Ibrox but that they face competition from the English Championship.

Wigan are set to lose Windass this summer after entering administration and suffering relegation to League One.

Sheffield Wednesday are keen on signing the Hull-born ace permanently after his temporary stint, while Boro boss Neil Warnock would like to add the forward to his squad after guiding the club to safety.

He played a total of nine times for the Owls after he joined the club in January, including in every game since the restart of the Championship.

Windass, who has featured as an attacking midfielder and a striker, arrived at Rangers from Accrington Stanley in 2016 and went on to make 73 appearances for the Glasgow giants before being sold for a reported £2.25million.

Speaking after the forward’s departure, Gerrard confirmed that he was not able to offer the player game time in his preferred position and that he did not want to stand in the way of a move to Wigan.

The Gers boss is back in the market for a centre-forward after losing Jermain Defoe to a hamstring injury, while Alfredo Morelos could be sold.

Rangers

As revealed by Football Insider, the Light Blues are in advanced talks with Lille over a record-breaking deal for the Colombian.

Greg Stewart is the Gers’ only other senior striker, although the 30-year-old has been played all across the front line while at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, the club have been urged to sign a £2million-rated forward who has ‘given Celtic nightmares’.
