Rangers are plotting a marquee striker signing to make Ibrox explode next season, Football Insider understands.

The Light Blues are working on recruiting an A-list attacking star who can help end their trophy pain and stop Celtic careering to their ninth consecutive league title.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that chairman Dave King has given the green light to backing Steven Gerrard with a top-quality and expensive addition on Premier League-style wages.

Watford striker Andre Gray and out-of-contract Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck have been linked with the Glasgow giants, and that is the kind of calibre Rangers want to improve their team and end Celtic's dominance.

Encouragingly for Ibrox fans, King and the board are prepared to spend big, on either fee or salary, and possibly both, to give Gerrard a forward who can strike fear into the opposition.

The Hoops will secure a third consecutive treble if they defeat Hearts in Saturday's Scottish Cup final, while Rangers ended the campaign trophy-less despite signs of improvement under Gerrard.
