Darren Bent gushed about Manchester City fringe player Phil Foden and suggested he is getting better every day.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Premier League striker revealed he is a big fan of Foden having been convinced of his ability in the summer.

The 19-year-old playmaker has made 17 appearances across all competitions this season and was an unused substitute in the 3-2 loss to Wolves on Friday.

Bent explained that Foden was likely learning from the likes of David Silva and Bernardo Silva so suggested his development wasn’t being stunted despite his lack of playing time.

When asked if he has been convinced by what he has seen of Foden, Bent told Football Insider: “He’s getting more minutes and I have to say I’m a big fan of his.

“I really like what he can do, I think we saw what he could do at the European Under-21 Championships in the summer.

“When him and Maddison were on the pitch at the same time, he was head and shoulders above Maddison.

“He seems to be getting more and more minutes and he’s another one who’ll be in Gareth Southgate’s thinking.

“I’ve had this debate (about whether he should be loaned) many times and I’ve gone back and forth.

“He needs to get game time, should he go to someone at the lesser end of the Premier League? That’s not going to do him any favours because he’s been brought up to play the Pep way.

“Will he learn as much day-in-day-out training with other players at other clubs as he would training with the likes of David Silva?

“For me, I think he’s best off where he is, to learn off David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Sterling, seeing these guys every day…you may be getting only 15 minutes here and there, but he’s getting better every day as he’s learning.”

The Man City teenager is yet to complete 90 minutes in any of his nine league outings, with Pep Guardiola opting to use him sparingly from the bench.

Foden has been at Man City for the entirety of his professional career and is contracted to stay with The Citizens until 2024.
