'Imagine...' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips reacts to confirmed Spurs transfer reveal today

Kevin Phillips claimed Tottenham must bring in some new players in the summer window to supplement his January signings.

The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested a striker and central defender are the most urgent priorities ahead of next season.

Mourinho told Sky Sports, “Year after year after year it’s more difficult so I’m not thinking about an overhaul at the moment. But of course, we need to make our squad better.”

Spurs completed two signings in the January window with the additions of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven and Lo Celso from Real Betis, who had spent the first half of the season on loan at the Lilywhites.

When asked for his assessment of Mourinho’s comments on the club’s transfer plans, Phillips told Football Insider: It is so hard to do an overhaul in one window so that will be one of the reasons he has said that.

“Secondly, they have got some really good players there. It just needs tweaking. Only Mourinho knows which areas. He does not need a hell of a lot of players but he needs some.

“It is going to be interesting where he identifies those areas. The striker role, you would imagine, he is going to bring another player in. Of course, it will be a back-up striker once Kane is fit. Does he go for another centre-half? It will be interesting to see where he strengthens in the window.”

Spurs have been playing without a recognised striker since Son Heung-min suffered a broken arm in the 3-2 victory away to Aston Villa last month.

Harry Kane is already sidelined after undergoing surgery on his hamstring and is expected to be back in April in time to make a full recovery before this summer’s Euros.

In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider Jose Mourinho is picking one player on reputation only.
