'Absolutely impossible' - Exclusive: Bruce frets over Leeds stars after behind-the-scenes reveal

Alex Bruce insists it will be “impossible” for the Leeds United players to keep up their fitness levels up to Marcelo Bielsa’s standards after the closure of the training ground.

The former Leeds and Hull City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the squad will lose their edge during their time training at home.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that that United went into full lockdown and had shut their Thorp Arch headquarters following the updated coronavirus advice.

Biela had been running first-team training as usual amid the suspension of fixtures before the decision was taken to send the players home.

Bruce says that the players at Elland Road will not be able to reproduce the demands of a Bielsa training session on their own.

Bruce told Football Insider: “It’s impossible for any footballer to replicate what you do on the training ground. When you train by yourself, it’s absolutely impossible to do what you do in training.

“There’s no training more beneficial to a footballer than when you are doing football-related exercises with the amount of bodies to a similar level to what you are.

“Bielsa demands certain fitness levels, only he will know when the players come back the level they are at. Footballers are that athletic, certainly in my career, I noticed that when you go back for pre-seasons now, it doesn’t look like some certain people have been away.”

Leeds currently sit top of the Championship table, seven points clear of third-placed Fulham.

They have nine games left to play, including a home tie against the Cottagers.

In other Leeds United news, Brighton have made a move which gives a big hint as to Ben White’s future.
