Incredible stat shows why this unsung Tottenham hero is a player Poch cannot do without
Mousa Dembele had a tough start to the season but is now performing at a level that will be making Mauricio Pochettino purr with delight again.
He has already called Dembele a genius and re-iterated that belief after the north London derby which Tottenham won 1-0 earlier this month.
“I have told you many times,” Pochettino said as quoted by Sky Sports. “For me, he is a genius. An unbelievable player.”
Dembele put in an incredible shift in the 2-2 draw with Juventus in Turin last week and statistics prove that, while Harry Kane is scoring the goals that behind Tottenham’s recent success, it might all be for nothing without a player like Dembele.
The Sky report claims that no Juventus player made more than 10 passes in the opposition half, while Dembele completed an incredible 73.
He is also the only midfielder to rank in the top 20 in the Premier League for tackles and dribbles in the past three seasons.
And it’s not just volume – from the midfielders that have tried 40 dribbles or more this season, Dembele has the highest success rate at 88% and it’s this number that perhaps highlights why Tottenham enjoy so much success with him on the pitch.
He’s also got more than a 90% success rate with passes – the only midfielder in the Premier League with that impressive stat.
Dembele seems to have got over the injury that kept him out for five games earlier in the season although there is obviously something going on with Pochettino saying that it’s crucial to keep him fit.
With stats like these you can see why Pochettino considers him central to everything that he’s trying to achieve at Tottenham and why he deserves more of the accolades normally reserved for the glamour attackers.
