West Ham have been hit by a new injury blow as Andy Carroll's return is set to be delayed until the end of October, according to a report.

It was initially expected that the England striker would be sidelined for six weeks after appearing in just one of their five Premier League matches this season.

That would have mean Carroll returning at the start of October, but the Sun claim the player fears he will now be out until the end of the month.

Carroll suffered the injury during a Europa League qualifier against Astra Giurgiu in mid-August.

His absence has been sorely felt by West Ham, who have picked up just three points and are 18th in the Premier League table.

Manager Slaven Bilic is also unable to call on record signing Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho as well as Aaron Cresswell, as they all recover from serious injuries.

It is the latest in a series of serious injuries for former Liverpool and Newcastle striker Carroll, who took to Twitter last month to reassure fans that he is still their 15-20 goal-a-season man.

Carroll has had a series of setbacks since joining for Liverpool in 2012, initially on loan before the deal was made permanent.

They host League Two Accrington on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup third round.

In other West Ham team news, this starting XI would beat Accrington.
