Everton boss Ronald Koeman has revealed that defensive duo Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane could both miss the club’s next two fixtures through injuries.
The Toffees face Apollon Limassol in their second group match of the Europa League on Thursday and will then go on to play Burnley in the Premier League next weekend, games which both are likely to miss.
The centre-back pair sat out of the Blues’ recent 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park with Ashley Williams and Cuco Martina stepping in front of Jordan Pickford in the backline instead.
When asked about the duo, the Everton boss revealed that there is a possibility that his summer signing could potentially feature next weekend while the skipper is definitely out of action until after the upcoming international break.
“It’s not so bad, maybe you remember the tackle of last Wednesday? His foot was a little bit open and the doctor said he will maybe reach next Sunday but he (Keane) will be doubtful for Thursday,” Koeman said after his side’s victory, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“I think he cannot start on Thursday but maybe yes on Sunday (against Burnley).
“Jagielka has a slight hamstring problem and will be one week to 10 days out and we will not take that risk before the international break.
“We did not have seven normally starting players today so it is even more of a compliment to the players who played today for what they showed.”
The Toffees’ victory over the Cherries marked their second win in the Premier League as the club had failed to secure a win since the opening weekend of the competition after their 1-0 result over Stoke City.
Since then, Koeman’s side have had a number of difficult opponents and suffered defeats to Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United in successive fixtures.
The Merseyside club will be hoping that their confidence boost will help them to secure a better result in the Europa League after they previously lost 3-0 to Italian outfit Atalanta.
In other Everton news, the Toffees have also made an approach for this Champions League goalscorer.
